Hey! The moment that you've been waiting 2 weeks for is finally here! I say its about damn time I bring you guys the first update to my first side project with Maori Kinjo! Throughout the course of this blog I'll take you guys through the lyrics as well as some of the instrumentation! So lets jump right in!
The Lyrics
The lyrics for this song took longer than expected to write as I haven't written a proper, full-length song in a while, but we got there in the end! They read as follows:
Verse 1
Waking up, its 12pm on a Monday I
Always seem to wonder what I could've done with my morning
Turn on my phone to find 6 missed calls
3 from my mother and others I seem to ignore
but
Prechorus 1
Could you tell me did I ever really wake up?
Tripping over every mistake that I've made
No
I find it hard to make up
For the time that sleep just gives away
Chorus
But now I live in the big city
I'm always busy
making time for my friends and family isn't easy
Anymore
Days like these I'm far from home
wishing I was in my backyard with my dog
But now I know I'll never
Have the life I used to own
Verse 2
I know you miss me while I'm gone
And I know I don't call you
Don't feel bad thats my fault I've
Never been good at staying in touch
I struggle to talk to my dad and thats bad enough
But
Prechorus 2
Could you tell me did I ever really wake up?
I drink too much and my memory starts to fade
Oh
12pm I'll wake up again
My head hurts can someone ease this pain?
Chorus
Cause now I live the big city
I'm always busy
Making time for my friends and family isn't easy
Anymore
Days like these I'm far from home
Wishing I was in my backyard with my dog
But now I know I'll never
Have the life I used to own
Bridge
Now I feel I'm
Losing grip I'm
Falling further away
My mind seems to wonder
When I'm not sober
I promise I'll be home someday
Soon
Chorus
Now I live in the big city
I'm always busy
Making time for my friends and family isn't easy
Anymore
Days like these I'm far from home
Wishing I was in my backyard with my dog
But now I know I'll never
Have the life I used to own
The meaning...
As stated in my last blog on this project, the song is themed around the concept of being homesick and adjusting to a new city - the chorus emphasises this. Furthermore, as a boy who came from a small country town myself, moving to a big city where it is always busy is very new and can be quite daunting. This coupled with going to uni and everything that comes with it, including the alcohol, is very overwhelming but at the same time can also be very fun. The lyrics throughout the song address different moments that I've experienced over the last 2 weeks as I have been home once since then. The second verse particularly is addressed to my father and brother, who I struggle to communicate with (simply because I'm lazy). The overall meaning of the song however is mainly a message to both Maori's and my own parents to, in a way, say "hey, its me! I'm ok" and also to say that we're well and enjoying every second of every day.
Instruments!
"Levels, if it's an electronic song, do you even need organic insturments bruh?" - of bloody course we do! Yes, even though this song is an electronically based song, it is not that of a fast paced one. At this current stage, I'm aiming for the song to be approximately 80BPM, just in the lines of generic trap music. With a BPM this slow, it should enable us to create a smooth strumming pattern for our guitars as well as being a genuinely good tempo to sing at. Below, you will find a photo of the guitars we'll be using in our song, with the smaller one being Maori's guitar!

The main goal for these guitars is to have the larger fender guitar play the main rhythm and chords for the song and have the smaller Tanglewood guitar play plucks over the top. This way, we can get the nice low-end from the body of my guitar and utilise the size of the Tanglewood to our advantage to draw out some nice high-end sounds!
In terms of progress...
Our first recording session is taking place this Saturday afternoon and in this session we aim to get all of the guitars and vocals recorded. If we fall short of time however, we will simply record the rest 2 days later. However, knowing the productivity on both Maori's and my end, we should be able to power through this. What's more is that the electronic elements of the track will be added two days later on the following Monday. In this session, the overall structure of the song will be laid out and the track will most likely begin with the drop (similarly to my last track). By creating the drop first, I can decide from there what to pick and choose in terms of creating the verses, prechorus' and choruses.
To finish
This coming week is going to be one hell of a week so get keen for many more updates on this project as well as my Audio X Animation project! I know this blog has been well overdue for some time now I apologise for that. However, considering the aim of the game is to have this song recorded and mixed by the end of the week, you'll be seeing many more updates from me very soon! As usual stay tuned and I'll catch ya next time!
